Scratch build of outboard motor

Messages recommandés

Having spent time and money maintaining the tfl outboard I decided to try and make my own outboard,  one that could be filled with oil so the gears last longer. I looked around for gears because I wanted them to be helical so they would run quieter,  the smallest I could find were 21mm across so this decided the whole size of the project.

Arsene, Thanks will bear those in mind next time.

Xavier,  Yes I think you could be right , but I will try now I am this far.  Then if it fails I can see about reducing the size/diameter of the gearbox.

Interesting concept to put the propeller up front I hadn't thought of that , how did you think of it?

The photo compares my bearing and gear with the tfl ones.

The middle section is at the stl file stage. The motor mount also acts as location for the cowl.

I have just been given a delivery date for the 3d printer, so not long now before I can print the other parts and I can stop pestering my next door neighbour to print things😆

The size is more realistic than the tfl for my fishing boat

A friend is working on the same size outboard,  he has come up with a great idea , to use two drive belts. This could be quiet and no need for oil 🤣

Concept intéressant pour mettre l'hélice à l'avant je n'y avais pas pensé, comment l'avez-vous pensé ?

Pour un projet de bateau sur foils... Où il y a besoin d'économiser un maximum de puissance et poids embarqués...

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally plucked up the courage to print the mid section,  printing all night, took 13 hours🤗

Will need to be sanded , which probably means painting too.

Cheers Phil. Cleaned out the holes , partly by drilling, but very carefully as if the drill gets hot the plastic melts. I also used brass tubes of the right size, quite satisfying to tap with a hammer and a support pops out😁 no problem tapping the 3mm holes for securing the motor plate. I noticed the cowl and the mid section were slightly different so checked back and found the mistake, I had the radius on the mid section at 21 should have been 24, to allow 3mm cowl thickness, oh well no harm done.
The motor pivots so far then catches the boat, might need to find a way to lift it a bit more, the mount is fixed to the boat and can't be moved now.

I made some changes to the cad drawing to solve the 2 issues I had, and I am now printing a mark 2, hopefully with a better finish. If this project is a success then I will be making more outboards so this mid section won't go to waste.

It will be interesting to check the weight of both mid sections.

Wow much better finish, and a perfect match to the cowl now.  I did weigh both, the first was 154g this one is 88g .  Too much weight could be a problem so good that it's lighter.

The pivot mount had too much play in it, so I drew one up and printed it . A lot better now the motor can turn a full 90 degrees, not that I need that much.

I added a brass tube for the pivot screw to save the plastic from wearing.

I didn't like the loose fit of the tfl pivot so I designed my own and printed it up at 100% for strength then added a brass tube as a bearing. Nice fit now, so next I need to do one of the gearbox halves, been holding off as I am still learning the settings available of which there are a lot. Do I print at 100% for strength or say 60% to save weight, my leaning is towards 60.

I have the anycubic vyper,  and I think it's great. It went together very quickly, the quality is very high, but the price is also very reasonable £330. It automatically levels itself, has a great touch screen.  I would recommend it, it's getting good reviews on u tube too.

It might look like I have made some progress, but it's one step forward and 2 backwards. I knew the print was no good as soon as it started, but I let it go anyway, it's been great to see it. However I think I need to redraw it from scratch, as any imperfections in the drawing show up in the way it prints. Whilst I am at it I can shorten the lower shaft to bring the prop forward, since I followed Bob's advice to add another bearing forward I can now shorten the space between the two rear bearings.

So having redrawn the gearbox , it is now slimmer and more streamlined , also the propeller has been moved forward by quite a lot. The fin is smaller and more central but thicker which has helped it to print better.

I made a tool for machining inside the gearbox as it's awkward to get to.

I thought I had allowed plenty of clearance in the mid section , but it seems I didn't allow enough. Maybe I can get round it. Putting it all together highlights the problems.

Sure, I totally understand!

Will the culprit part stay hunder the hull? If so that's not that much of an issue. If not, maybe just increasing hull <=>outboard linkage lenght would solve your issue.

edit: I'm not sure I understand where is the flaw, sorry:/ Where it is?
