Wild Thing mono 800mm

Cozy RC

Messages recommandés

Bonjour RC friends, I share my latest build with you. It is a 800mm mono hull, based on the Wild Thing designed by John Finch. I redesigned the bulkheads to accomodate the electric setup better. I scratch build all my boats from wood and laminate.

General spec and hardware:

Length: 800mm

Motor: Rocket 4074 2000kV

Speed control: Flycolor 150A

Lipo: 6S 4500 - 5200mAh

Speed: 100+ km/h

Here are some photos:

The bulkheads are from 3mm plywood. The hull bottom is 1.5mm birch ply and the sides and deck are 0.8 and 1.0mm plywood. The transom is 2x 3mm birch plywood.

The hull is laminated with 50-110gr/m2 glass. Inside and outside.

Maiden voyage video:

First run with 43mm 1.4  pitch prop I got 92km/h.

Second time with CNHL 90C 6S lipo, the Wild Thing reached 102km/h.

I made several build videos. Here's the link if you're interested:

I hope to share some of my other builds later. 😀

The Wild Thing is finished. I ran it yesterday at a Dutch RC Powerboat event 😎

I ran the boat last Friday at a RC Powerboats meeting in the Netherlands.

No chance for real high speeds, but it is interesting to see how the boat handles choppy water:

Today I tried a 44mm 1.6 pitch 2 blade prop. The Wild Thing ran a bit loose due to the prop lift. But also fast! A got a new speed record of 114km/h. This pond is definitely getting too small for speed running 😅

This weekend I ran my Wild Thing with trim tabs installed. I also tried a 3 blade 44mm prop. Here's the video of that run, with my comments and speed results:

Unfortunately I broke the wooden rudder bracket. I decided to make a new one from aluminium:

I also made a wider rudder and different turn fins.

Today I tried the new hardware, with great results. I got a new speed record of 116km/h and with a smaller prop I can take corners full throttle.

Here's the video of today's run:

Hello RC friends,

I did some more speed runs and with a shorter rudder, I got a new speed record at 123km/h.

I run a budget setup with a €56 Rocket 4074 2000kV motor and a €53 Flycolor 150A speed controller.

I also added an ER8 CNC collet (coupler) between the motor and flex shaft. This reduces the driveline vibration.

Unfortunately it's Game Over for my Wild Thing. It got totally wrecked during a crash and dive.

20230808_195319.thumb.jpg.18c039d83919c27fd95a072e2a2f8533.jpg

It's beyond repair😪 so I took out all the hardware and electronics. Luckily all electronics still work, but the GPS sank..

Here's the latest video with the crash and damage review:

Here's a compilation video, where I cover almost all setups that I tried on the Wildthing. From speed running to oval setups.

It might be a good reference if you're running a 800mm mono 😎
